Journey to the magnificent archaeological site of the ancient Ephesus

Your driver and licensed guide will meet you in front of Izmir's port Passenger Terminal. As your air-conditioned motor coach makes its way towards Selcuk Town you drive along the blue Aegean shores and see cotton fields, vineyards and pine wood forests. Your first stop is the ancient city of Ephesus where you start at the Magnesia Gate and walk downhill through the fascinating city. Your licensed guide will bring the past to life as you stroll streets lined with columns and paved with marble. You will see the Odeon, where the advisory council held its meetings, the Temple of Hadrian, Roman Baths, and many other monuments and ruins. The most impressive sight is the much photographed Celsus Library towering at the end of the main street. Equally impressive is the ancient theater which can seat 24,000 people and is sometimes still used. After your visit to Ephesus, you'll take a short drive to picturesque amlik Village. Here you'll relax and enjoy a tasty barbecue lunch in the shade of umbrella pines. Afterwards enjoy a lecture about Turkish weaving, see the young women at the looms knotting carpets and kilims. Learn about the natural dyes and learn the differences between Silk, flosh, wool and cotton weavings for handmade rugs. The proprietors give a fascinating demonstration of these local traditional crafts. See how they are produced and enjoy the chance to purchase a rug if you are interested. After lunch visit the Archaeological Museum of Ephesus established in 1929 to display the many valuable finds from the ancient site you toured earlier. Some of the highlights include the statues of Artemis (Diana) and marble reliefs and frescoes discovered at the Terrace Houses. Later this afternoon you drive back to Izmir.
